If you've got a dent and your factory paint is still intact, there's a good chance it can be fixed without any paint or bodywork at all. Here's what paintless dent repair (PDR) actually is, and when it's the right call.

What Is Paintless Dent Repair?

PDR is a technique where a trained technician accesses the back side of a dented panel — through the door, trunk, or wheel well, depending on the damage — and uses specialized metal tools to gently massage the dent back to its original shape from the inside out. There's no filler, no sanding, and in most cases, no repainting.

Why It Matters for Your Car's Value

Repainting a panel, even well, changes the vehicle's paint history. For newer cars, luxury vehicles, or anything you plan to sell down the line, keeping 100% original factory paint is a real value advantage — it shows up on vehicle history and paint-thickness inspections that many buyers and dealers check for.

What PDR Can Fix

PDR works well on:

  • Hail damage
  • Door dings
  • Minor creases from shopping carts or small impacts
  • Most dents where the paint hasn't cracked or chipped

What PDR Can't Fix

PDR isn't a fit for every situation. It generally won't work if:

  • The paint is cracked, chipped, or peeling at the dent site
  • The metal has been stretched too far to flex back into place
  • The dent is on a sharp body line or edge where the metal has creased sharply
  • There's been prior bodywork or filler already applied to the panel

In these cases, traditional paint and body work is usually the better route, and a good technician will tell you honestly if that's the case rather than attempt a repair that won't hold up.

Is It Actually Permanent?

Done correctly, yes. PDR doesn't weaken the metal or leave the panel more vulnerable than before — it restores the original shape and factory paint finish, with no shortcuts that could fail down the line.
